On the Banks and Beyond: A River Guide's Journey

On the Banks and Beyond: A River Guide's Journey

My Beginnings

I got started fishing as just a little kid when my grandpap would take me bank fishing with fly rods for bluegill. A fly rod for a kid learning to fish—especially one with a short attention span—got me hooked! One of my favorite memories is when my grandpap caught a 4-plus pound smallmouth bass and casually threw it back like it was trash as he cast back out, all while fishing for walleye.

Fishing Style & Techniques

I primarily fish for smallmouth bass on the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers in central Pennsylvania. This year, I opened a guide service and now take people out on my jet boat to share this amazing fishery.

One of my favorite areas is right in the city of Harrisburg—fishing along the river walk where I often catch big fish, sometimes with crowds cheering me on. It kinda makes me feel professional!

I consider myself a power fisherman who loves moving baits. My favorite lure is hands down the bladed jig. Even in open water, a few pumps of the rod send the bait into erratic, enticing action that draws in some vicious strikes!

My personal best bass to date include an 8lb 8oz largemouth bass and a 5lb 12oz smallmouth bass—both caught from a kayak!

Advice & Inspiration

My advice to fellow anglers is simple: do what’s comfortable for you and have confidence in your own approach. Too many times, fishermen struggle because they follow someone else’s advice instead of trusting their own instincts.

For those getting into bass fishing, I’d recommend learning to use a baitcasting rod and reel. It’s so much more effective when it comes to throwing moving baits.

Beyond Fishing

When I’m not out on the water guiding or fishing, I’m working as a federal police officer. With long, rotating shifts, there isn’t much spare time for other hobbies—but I love every minute I get to fish!

I was introduced to WindRider gear when I learned about the flotation properties of their suits. The safety it provides can be life saving, and I felt confident that I could market that product fairly easily.

My favorites? I really like the AllPro Rain Gear—it keeps me bone dry in the rain. A close second is the hooded Helios shirt, which is both stylish and practical.
