If you could go to any sailing event past or present, what would it be?
Key West Race Week in the 90's, and I did go. It was great sailing along with great partying. The attendance was 300+ which made for quite the spectacle. Every sailor who was anyone was there. Biggest rum tent that they could physically get giving away free Mount Gay rum. They gave out daily prizes so everyone was congregating at the tent. That is what is great about sailing, everyone participates in the sailing and the social. All boats we a part of the regatta from J24s to Farr 40s. It was sort of the beginning of the professional area.
1978 was the first j24 regatta I sailed down in Key West and it was also the finish of the Miami to Key West distance race. They had a huge oil boiler making conch fritters, they were the most amazing things ever. I had never tried one but someone said trust me you will like it, they were right. And boy was the rum flowing. The actual Key West Race Week started in the 80's carrying on the tradition of the rum bar.
