Future of Fishing: A Journey with Hank Asher

About Hank

Hey, I’m Hank Asher, an 18-year-old senior in high school whose future will 100% have something to do with fishing. Whether it’s in the professional tournament world, guiding, or both, walleye fishing will always be a guarantee in my life.

Ever since I was just a baby, I was exposed to fishing and became obsessed with walleyes. My mother is a walleye fishing guide on Lake Oahe, and I’ve spent my entire life being on the water and learning from some of the best.

My Fishing Style & Adventures

I prefer lakes and reservoirs, and I enjoy using forward-facing sonar to its full potential. I love finding fish and catching them in unique places using baits you might not think about trying.

In my short life, I’ve fished all over South Dakota and even ventured into the oceans of Alaska, Florida, California, and Cabo San Lucas. Cabo is probably where my most memorable fish catch occurred. I fought a swordfish for two hours, and when we finally landed the 150-pounder, a great big whale began leaping out of the water repeatedly right by the boat, even as the swordfish still lay there. I like to think that whale was my father—who recently passed away—giving me a “Hell Yeah!”

Both my mother and father are the reasons I strive to be the greatest fisherman I can be.

Words of Wisdom

The best fishing advice I’ve ever received is that a guy should fish every day because you never know when it could be your last. This advice has motivated me to keep fishing hard—even on days when I might not feel like it.

If I had to give any advice to someone just starting out, I’d say: give the walleye something they’ve never seen before and be open to bouncing ideas off other fishermen.

Gear & Confidence

When I’m out fishing, I always have my WindRider gear on, and my favorite piece is the ice fishing suit. It’s incredibly warm, water- and wind-proof, and knowing it can float is a huge confidence booster—especially when walking on ice.
