Getting Hooked: Early Days on the Water
My name is Luke Routh, I’m 32 and from Stockton, Missouri. My fishing journey started at a very young age when I would head out with my grandpa to catch crappie for meat. Those early days on the water are some of my fondest memories. I’ll never forget catching my personal best—a 2.18lb Truman Lake crappie—with my grandpa.
Later on, when I was about 23, a buddy of mine got into bass fishing and took me along to a tournament. I was immediately hooked on the competition and the thrill of figuring them out.
Fishing Style & Techniques
When it comes to water, I prefer fishing both lakes and rivers. I’m a river rat at heart—I love getting into the skinny water and chasing fish.
As for favorite spots, I’ve got some secret locations that I always return to (sorry, no coordinates! 🤣).
My go-to technique is fishing with a jig. It was the first bait I mastered, and my advice is simple: "Pick it up and don’t put it down."
One of my most memorable catches is my personal best—a 7.89lb Missouri largemouth bass that I landed this past fall using a glide bait.
Advice & Inspiration
The best fishing advice I’ve ever received is to spend as much time on the water as possible. No matter the conditions or temperature, learning to fish in every situation is key to becoming a well-rounded angler.
For those just getting into bass fishing, I suggest keeping it simple. Don't worry about having too much gear. Start with a couple of good rods and reels, and a few baits—like a spinnerbait and a jig—to really learn what works for you.
Beyond Fishing
When I’m not on the water, I’m usually hanging out with my family and my children. Fishing is my main passion, so I don’t have much time for other hobbies!
